Gout Q&A

What is gout?

Gout, also known as gouty arthritis, is a condition that causes pain, swelling, and inflammation in your joints. Although gout can affect any of your joints (like your ankles, wrists, knees, or fingers), it most frequently affects the joint at the base of the big toe.

Gout is caused by high levels of uric acid that build up in your joints. Normally, your body passes uric acid through your kidneys and excretes it through your urine.

In some cases, the body doesn’t eliminate uric acid properly, causing excess uric acid to build up around the joints.

What are the symptoms of gout?

A gout attack is a sudden and severe bout of pain, inflammation, redness, and stiffness in your joints. Most people with gout experience attacks during the middle of the night or in the early morning.

Gout causes swelling near the base of the big toe that’s often mistaken for a bunion. It can also cause itchy skin and lingering discomfort as the attack subsides.

Who gets gout?

Gout is most common in men between the ages of 30-50. Women are more likely to develop gout after menopause.

There are a number of factors that can lead to high levels of uric acid, including:

  • Genetics
  • Poor diet
  • Obesity
  • High alcohol consumption
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Kidney disease
  • Certain medications
  • High blood pressure

Diets rich in red meats, seafood, or beer can increase your levels of uric acid, eventually leading to gout.

Gout is a painful condition that can lead to complications like kidney stones or chronic gout. If you experience symptoms, Dr. Yeager can determine the right way to manage your condition.

What gout treatments are available?

Before beginning treatment for gout, Dr. Yeager performs a thorough examination. In addition to a physical, she may also perform a blood test, joint fluid test, X-ray, or ultrasound.

After your diagnosis, Dr. Yeager works with you to determine the most effective treatment.

Without treatment, your symptoms may continue to worsen. In most cases, Dr. Yeager can help you manage your condition with a proper diet and the right medication.
